Included translations

  • DRA: Douay-Rheims Bible, American edition
(Imprimatur: James Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore, Sep 1 1899)
First published in 1582, the Douay-Rheims Bible was commonly used by English-speaking Catholics all the way through the early 20th century (at which point Pope Pius XII called for new translations based on older source manuscripts.) The version in this app, also known as "Challoner revision", is still preferred by many traditionalists today.
  • KJV: King James Version
The King James Version was first published in 1611 and is the preferred translation for most Protestants today. The version in this app is the 1769 standardized text known as the Authorized Version. Some books are omitted in this Bible which are present in the other two.
  • WEB: World English Bible
The World English Bible was a 1997-2000 internet-based project to update the American Standard Version (published in 1901) into more easily readable English. Although it is not commonly used in any particular church, it appears in this app because it's one of the few non-copyrighted Bibles in modern English.

Note also: in DRA, the psalms are identified using the Greek numbering. The KJV and WEB editions use the Hebrew numbering.

Hey, my favorite translation is missing!

Nearly all of the more modern translations are under copyright. Since I'm distributing this app for free, gaining the rights to those isn't feasible for me at this time.

(For the curious: I obtained the Bible texts in USFX format from ebible.org, and wrote a program that converts them into plain text.)

Whipping this out Sunday morning at church is awesome. This is probably one of the most intuitive Bible apps I’ve used.

Very readable and user-friendly, a respectable achievement for such a large piece of work on such a tiny device! Good work.  I made a little overview video, I hope you don't mind if I post it here?

To follow up, I'm really happy with the different translations provided. If verse numbers were included, this would be nearly perfect!

Agreed, "perfection" would be optional verse numbers. However, I really like not having them, as it makes it easier to simply read. It's quickly becoming my go-to when I want to just read, rather than study.

This is great.

Aw, mate this is what I was hoping for!
